Job Summary:

Primarily responsible for loading and transporting non-emergent patients using a wheelchair van and lift to various locations.  Occasionally provides emergency care and transportation of the sick and injured in accordance with established BSA Health System Policies, Department Guidelines and Patient Care Protocols.  Safely operates emergency and non-emergency vehicles in compliance with all laws, BSA Policies and Department Guidelines.  Accepts other tasks assigned by the Shift Commander, EMS or PMS Division Supervisor or Paramedicine Services Director.

Responsibilities include:

Interview and obtain an accurate medical history from the patient, family members and bystanders.

Calculate weight and volume ratios and read small print, both under life-threatening time constraints.

Safely operates emergency vehicles in compliance with all laws, BSA Policies and Department Guidelines.

Perform duties under intermittent or continuous physiological duress including but not limited to: bodies with known or unknown communicable diseases; environments with known or unknown hazardous materials, chemical materials or biological materials; persons with known or unknown mental or psychological disorders; unruly or verbally abusive persons; violent or combative persons; dead or dying persons; family or friends of dead or dying persons and life and death assessment-triage-treatment decisions.

Education/Licensures/Certifications:

ECA Registry is preferred

Certification as ECA by the Texas Department of State Health Services; or preferred candidate will complete the required

training/certification within 60 days of beginning the next available training upon hire at the Ambulance Service.

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR required

Valid minimum Class C Texas Driver License with restriction “A” permissible

Completion of the following Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency National Incident

Management System (NIMS) courses: IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800.A required within 80 days of employment    

Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) is preferred

Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

9-1-1 field experience is preferred

Operation of wheelchair van and wheelchair lift experience preferred

Demonstrates competency handling emergencies utilizing all BLS equipment and skills in accordance with all local protocols and behavioral objectives in the National Standard Curriculum for ECA.

Demonstrates knowledge of ALS equipment.

Read, write, speak and understand the English language and demonstrate effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively, and asking pertinent questions where clarification is required.

Able to accurately type at least 20 wpm and has basic computer skills.

Possess vision and hearing necessary to accomplish all of the psychomotor skills for the EMT or AEMT.

Interpret written, oral and diagnostic form instructions. Use good judgment and remain calm in high stress situations including situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.

Accurately discern street sign and address numbers and able to read maps.
